Historically low unemployment in March 2024

Statistics Poland confirmed the Ministry of the Family, Labour and Social Policy's estimates - the registered unemployment rate in Poland in March this year was 5.3 %. Lower unemployment in March was recorded for the last time in 1990.

According to Statistics Poland, the registered unemployment rate at the end of March 2024 was 5.3 %. Compared to February this year, it fell by 0.1 pp. - same as in March 2023. The lower unemployment rate in March was last recorded in 1990.

At the end of March 2024, there were 822.2 thousand unemployed persons registered in labour offices, which is 24.7 thousand (2.9 %) less than at the end of March 2023 and 23.1 thousand (2.7 %) less than in February this year. Thus, the dynamics of the decrease were stronger than in March between 2020 and 2023.

In March this year, 98.6 thousand unemployed people were registered in labour offices, while 121.6 thousand unregistered. Last month, 64.2 thousand people took up a job (including 50.4 % unsubsidised work, i.e. not financed from public funds). Meanwhile, 34 thousand of the unemployed started participating in active forms of employment.

Lowest unemployment in Wielkopolskie Voivodship (Greater Poland)

The unemployment rate at the end of March this year ranged from 3.2 % in the Wielkopolskie Voivodship to 8.7 % in the Podkarpackie Voivodship. It reached the lowest value in the city of Katowice, the district and city of Poznań (1.1 %), and the highest in the district of Szydłowiec (24.1 %).

Across the country, women were more likely to be unemployed - 51.8 % compared to 48.2 % of men, as well as urban residents - 54.7 % compared to 45.3 % of unemployed rural residents.

Poland among the EU leaders

Poland has long been among the top countries in the European Union with the lowest level of unemployment. According to Eurostat and its methodology, the unemployment rate in Poland in February this year was 2.9 %, compared to 6 % in the EU and 6.5 % in the Eurozone. Only the Czech Republic recorded a better result (2.6 %).
