At the 12th meeting of the Committee of the Parties to the Istanbul Convention held on 8 June 2022, five experts were elected to serve on the Council of Europe’s Group of experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO): Ms Päivi Hirvela (Finnish); Ms Aleid Van den Brink (Dutch; re-elected); Ms Ellen O’Malley Dunlop (Irish); Ms Laura Albu (Romanian); Mr Grzegorz Wrona (Polish). They will serve a term of four years, starting on 1 September 2022. 23 candidates from 14 countries applied for membership in GREVIO.
We congratulate all elected experts and wish them success in their future work.
At its meeting the Committee of the Parties discussed measures of the Istanbul Convention that contribute to preventing the risk of sexual and other violence to which women and children fleeing Ukraine may be exposed. They exchanged views on the relevant standards proposed by the Istanbul Convention, but also on the initiatives and approaches taken by several State Parties.
Permanent Representative, Ambassador Jerzy Baurski described steps taken in Poland to ensure safe, dignified and, as far as possible, normal living conditions for persons fleeing Ukraine. In a critical situation of refugee influx, on a scale unknown in Europe, Poland has guaranteed their safety and is providing assistance including in response to the traumatic experiences of women and children resulting of the war cruelly waged by Russians.
