50 medals for Team Poland at the Third European Games Kraków Małopolska 2023
03.07.2023
12 days, 13 cities and towns, 29 sports and nearly 7 000 athletes. The Third European Games Kraków-Małopolska 2023 have come to an end. The Polish national team has achieved very good results and has taken 6th place in the medal count, which is the white-and-reds’ best place in their history as participants of major multisport events.
- The European Games have been a success to be proud of. We have shown not only our sports capacities and the beauty of sporting competition but have proven again to be a successful host and organiser of major international sports events. Our commitment in this role has demonstrated that in the near future Poland will be ready to seek the hosting of Olympic Games. It is worth emphasizing that we have managed to conduct such a large multisport event without building new facilities. The European Games were held at sports facilities already existing in Poland, which were only modernised for the event thanks to the funds allocated by us, said Minister of Sport and Tourism Kamil Bortniczuk at a press conference concluding the Games.
Behind us are twelve days of top-level sporting endeavours and emotions. Our country hosted nearly 7 000 athletes from 49 national teams, who won a total of 1 626 medals in 29 sports. In the competitions, Poland was represented by 374 athletes who won 50 medals (13 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze ones). The white and reds also achieved two qualifications for the Olympic Games in Paris: one for the country in shooting, and an individual one, won by Łukasz Gutkowski, in modern pentathlon. The competitions were watched by over 170,000 fans who supported the athletes at 26 arenas in 13 cities.
- I would like to thank everyone for their commitment. The Games have been a true success exceeding all our expectations. We have received positive feedback from many sources. Poland has implemented a world-class project and will certainly be a proud host of many major sporting events in the future. It is also of great importance that all sports were played in line with the principle of fair play, in the true spirit of sport, said Spyros Capralos, President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC).
As for the organisational side, the Games were supported by about 4,500 volunteers, 1,000 firefighters, 14,000 security staff members, 1,000 police officers and 1,200 technical personnel members. 776 journalists provided live coverage of the events. The European Games also included over 500 hours of television broadcast and more than 1,000 hours of online streaming.
– For all of us, it has been a great celebration of European sport. These were the third Games but the first ones held in the territory of the European Union. I am pleased that the competitions took place in so many cities and towns of Małopolska. Thanks to this, the whole region could benefit from holding the event. For me, as the host, the opinions of athletes and visitors from other countries are very important, and they are positive. Thus, we should be proud of our efforts. Both Poland and the region of Małopolskie have a potential to host major multisport events. We are ready to take up even greater challenges, concluded Małopolskie Voivodeship Marshall Witold Kozłowski.
The European Games 2023, held in Kraków-Małopolska, have left a lasting legacy for the region as well as European sport. The event has contributed to the development of sports infrastructure and the promotion of culture and tourism in the region, and has strengthened ties between the nations.
– It was the first time I took part in such a large sporting event. This was something unimaginable. I am proud I had the opportunity to represent our country, and I am happy I have won two medals. It was amazing how many people supported us at the Market Square in Kraków. The stands were full and many people were watching the competitions on the screens. The event has been a big step in the development of my sport, said Adrian Duszak, silver and bronze medallist in teqball during the press conference.
A big thank you to the white-and-red-team for your commitment, determination and sportsmanship!
