World Tourism Day with „green energy”
27.09.2023
The World Tourism Day, celebrated in all corners of the globe, is a special day for all those who make up the tourism sector that is so important for the economy. Every year on 27 September countries’ tourism industries gather to discuss challenges, the current situation and prospects. This year, the Polish Celebration of World Tourism Day took place during the prestigious Second European Congress of Sport and Tourism in Zakopane.
The World Tourism Day, established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 1979, is held under a different theme every year. This year's celebration, focused on “Tourism and Green Investments”, was an opportunity to discuss the industry’s development in the spirit of sustainable tourism, the relations between travelling, ecology and environmental care, as well as “green” solutions for enterprises. It was not without reason that the representatives of the sector held their debates in Zakopane, a town that is inseparably linked with tourism. The most famous place in the Polish mountains and the heart of the Podhale region has been a favourite holiday destination for decades, not only for domestic tourists but also for foreigners. In the ranking of Top 10 nature destinations in Europe, published recently by Booking.com and Statista.com, the jewel of Małopolska province took the first place, leaving behind popular destinations in Austria, Germany, France or Portugal. “Green transformation” is also a theme discussed during a series of regional conferences entitled Cooperation-Innovation-Sustainable Tourism, launched in June by the Polish Tourism Organization with the aim of preparing the industry for the future changes.
This year’s theme can be seen as a continuation of the discussion started last year, the subject of which was “Rethinking tourism”. In 2022, the inspiring panels provided an opportunity to focus on the new opening and subsequent chapter in the history of tourism. It started after the end of a major global crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that reduced global tourist traffic by over 65%.
During the congress we held expert discussions on current topics related to sustainable tourism, innovation and the increasingly popular culinary tourism as a gateway to effective promotion of regions. The congress is an excellent opportunity to exchange experience within an international group of tourism industry representatives.
On 27 September, a special day for tourism, I had the honour to express our appreciation for persons who have particularly contributed to the development of the sector - said Vice-Minister of Sport and Tourism Andrzej Gut-Mostowy.
In addition to the exchange of experience and insights, the national celebration of the World Tourism Day is also an opportunity to honour those who, through their passion and lasting enthusiasm, contribute to the development of the industry. The award For special contribution to tourism was established to express appreciation for persons with particular achievements in developing tourism and is awarded by the minister responsible for tourism. The title, granted to individuals, organizations and institutions highlights their achievements in strengthening the role of tourism, its competitiveness and attractiveness. A key element taken into account when awarding the title is activity for qualitative development of the sector, including the promotion of quality and high standards in tourism.
