Celebrating the 230th anniversary of the May 3rd Constitution in Australia

Ambassador Michał Kołodziejski participated in the 3rd May Academy organized in Melbourne by the Polish Community Council in Victoria. At the initiative of the local Polish community and Polish Honorary Consuls across Australia, the celebrations commemorating the adoption of the May 3rd Constitution, as well as the celebrations of the Flag Day and the Day of the Polish Diaspora and Poles Abroad on May 2nd were held in many Australian cities, including in Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Perth and Sydney; as well as in Papua New Guinea.

230th anniversary of the Constitution of 3 May Melbourne

The Academy's program on the occasion of May 3rd in Melbourne was prepared by Polish schools and scouting organizations from the state of Victoria. On this occasion, Ambassador Michał Kołodziejski officially handed over the Letter of Commission to the newly appointed Honorary Consul General in Melbourne, Andrzej Soszyński.

During the May 3rd celebration organized in Adelaide, a letter from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland Zbigniew Rau with wishes for the Polish community and Poles abroad was read out. The “Tatry” folk group also performed at the Academy.

In Brisbane, ceremonies were held at the “Polonia” House, and local authorities lit up the bridges in the city center in white and red.

The Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney Monika Kończyk participated in the celebrations in the Polish House in Perth, where she decorated distinguished Poles with state awards: Zygmunt Sławek with the Siberian Exile Cross as well as Anna Lilpop and Waldemar Sokołowski with the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity. The “Kukułeczka” folk dance group performed at the event.

In New South Wales, the May holidays were celebrated by Poles i.e. in Ashfield, with the students from Polish diaspora schools and folk groups, as well as by the students of the Polish Saturday School in Macarthur. Celebration on the occasion of the May 3rd were also organized at the Polish House in Hobart. Children from the Polish school and their Australian friends, together with the “Oberek” dance group, prepared the Academy's program, which included a play depicting the arrival of the first soldiers from the Polish Independent Carpathian Brigade to Tasmania. Participants of the celebrations could also see the exhibition “Fighting and Suffering”, presenting the Polish experience during the Second World War.

Celebrations on the occasion of the 230th anniversary of the adoption of the May 3rd Constitution were also organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Canberra and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney. The event in Sydney was attended by the Governor of New South Wales, H.E. the Hon. Margaret Beazley AO QC.
