Screening of “Masha & Valentyna” documentary in Canberra

21.02.2023

To mark a year since Russia's full-scale aggression of Ukraine, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, together with the ANU Film Group, the ANU Centre for European Studies and the Ukrainian Embassy in Canberra, presented a screening of “Masha & Valentyna”, a documentary by Sydney-based filmmaker Simon Target.

Masha & Valentyna ANU 21.02.2023

The screening took place on Tuesday, 21 February 2023 at 7:30pm at the ANU Kambri Cultural Centre, and was followed by a Q&A session with the director. Especially for this occasion, Valentyna, one of the protagonists, had prepared from her home in Kyiv a video message to the audience.

About the film: Masha, 17 and Valentyna, 41 are just two of the estimated 7 million women and children who cross the border into Poland in 2022 because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They find safe haven in Polish homes, but face tough decisions for their future with their own families now split across Europe. Filmed largely by the women themselves on their own phones, this powerful new documentary from director Simon Target takes us into the real lives of people forced out of their homes by the war.
