Since then the competition has significantly grown in stature becoming a global and highly prestigious event with its followers in every corner of the world.
A record number of pianists – over 500 hundred from all over the world – had expressed willingness to take part in the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition. In December 2019 the qualifying committee selected over 160 candidates from 33 countries who advanced to the preliminaries. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Competition has been postponed to 2021. The preliminaries took place in July 2021 and 87 pianists have made it to the main competition.
