Minister Rau meets with Australian foreign minister
20.02.2022
Minister Zbigniew Rau hosted Australia’s head of diplomacy, Marise Payne, in Warsaw.
The ministers met in the context of a real threat of an armed conflict in Eastern Europe which could have global consequences.
Minister Rau also discussed steps he is currently taking in this respect both as foreign minister and the Chairman-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. The top diplomats shared their in-depth assessments of the security situation in Europe and the Indo-Pacific. “Poland and Australia are like-minded countries with respect to global challenges and threats, which translates into specific cooperation in the political, legal, and defence spheres,” emphasised Minister Zbigniew Rau. Minister Payne expressed the will to enhance cooperation with Poland, pointing out similar challenges and problems in both regions. The ministers agreed that despite the distance which separates the two countries, bilateral relations and cooperation in multilateral fora are very good. Since the visit of Poland’s President Andrzej Duda to Australia in 2018, the political, economic, and trade contacts have intensified. The date of the visit is also symbolic, since 20 February 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Poland and Australia.
