Minister Radosław Sikorski meets with Council of Europe's Deputy Secretary General Bjørn Berge

The talks focused on Poland’s cooperation with the Council of Europe in the promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as Poland’s and the Council of Europe’s further support for Belarus.
Minister Sikorski expressed support for actions taken by the Council of Europe and assured his interlocutor of Poland’s willingness to continue good cooperation with the Organisation. He also stressed the Polish government’s determination to implement the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
The head of the Polish MFA pointed to the importance of the Council of Europe’s measures in relation to Ukraine, including the development of the Statute of the Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation Against Ukraine.
Bjørn Berge outlined the direction for the Council of Europe’s work for the coming year and presented the Council’s new action plan for Belarus. The diplomats also discussed the efforts to release political prisoners in Belarus.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Council of Europe. The official celebrations will take place in Strasbourg on 16 May 2024 with the participation of foreign ministers of the Organisation’s member states.
