Digital Carpathian Europe is launched - a joint initiative of the Sejm and the GovTech Centre!

During the XXX Economic Forum in Karpacz, the Speaker of the Sejm of the VIII term, Marek Kuchciński, together with Justyna Orłowska - the Prime Minister's Plenipotentiary for GovTech announced the start of an international initiative aimed at tourism and heritage enthusiasts.

Title: Digital Europe of the Carpathians is launched!

Europe of the Carpathians brings together countries in the Carpathian region, connected geographically, historically and culturally. Podkarpacie is one of the most picturesque and attractive tourist regions in Poland. It offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy your time spent there. However, the whole region still hides many attractions, whose potential is best revealed with the help of innovative tools. That is why Digital Europe of the Carpathians was created.

Digital Europe of the Carpathians is a joint initiative of the Polish Parliament and the GovTech Centre at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, which aims to raise the profile and attractiveness of the region, build awareness among residents and tourists, and strengthen cooperation in the region, including within the framework of the European Union or the Tri-Cities.
As part of the cooperation, several activities are planned aimed at tourism enthusiasts, the region's residents and the industries operating there, focusing on the tourism sector and cultural institutions that will be actively involved in Digital Carpathian Europe.

Carpathian Europe has gained a new dimension. Digitalisation of the region brings an opportunity for deeper integration of Central and Eastern European countries, involving local communities in our proposed projects, games and applications. Together with GovTech, we reached for solutions that have a chance to attract creative people ready to cooperate to strengthen the brand that is Europe of the Carpathians. Innovation has become a fact, said Marek Kuchciński, Speaker of the Polish Sejm of the 8th term of office.

The first launch of the initiative took place during the Europe of the Carpathians Conference, which was the brainchild of Marek Kuchciński - Speaker of the Sejm of RP the eighth parliamentary term and chairman of the Sejm of RP Foreign Affairs Committee. The aim is that visitors to the region will already be able to enjoy regional attractions in an innovative, digital form in the next tourist season.

To this end, the first three pillars of Digital Carpathian Europe are already being planned - a special tourist application and two community-engaging actions - a tourist marathon and a geocaching marathon.

The centrepiece of the initiative is an application that uses modern community engagement tools based on gamification to encourage everyone to share their knowledge of the region's attractions. The application will allow everyone to add new attractions to the nationwide database, configure their own routes, and learn about the places they visit.
GovTech competition is innovative way to creating IT solution for public sector. For this purpose, the experience of the GovTech Centre will be used, which has developed a particular competition procedure that, thanks to its startup- and small business-friendly design, attracts 22 times more participants than traditional tenders. Those wishing to participate in the competition can already register their interest via the initiative's website.

Involving the community at every stage of the development of the application will allow us to provide information about culturally and historically significant places, natural sites and tourist routes in Carpathian Europe in an accessible way. In this way, we want to encourage residents and visitors to get to know areas less frequently visited by tourists.

Other initiatives will also be organised around the app, including geocaching which is about connecting the digital world with the real world through special boxes.

Two marathons will be organised to enable greater involvement of communities across the Carpathian region:

  • A geocaching marathon, which involves participants in the event locating hidden lockers (caches). The marathon is intended to encourage people to discover history by looking for lockers and visiting places attractive to tourists in the Podkarpacie region.

  • The tourism marathon aims to showcase the beauty hidden in public knowledge and engage the local community to share their knowledge of little-known places, showcasing them to the broader international community.

Those interested in taking part in the marathons can register via the initiative page.

The future of our region is developing under the banner of Digital Europe or Digital Tri-Cities. I am convinced that the Digital Europe of the Carpathians announced today with you, Mr. Speaker, will follow in this footsteps. Although this mountain range divides our countries geographically, they will be closer than ever thanks to digital cooperation. Most importantly for the benefit of tourists, economies, cultures and ultimately all of us. - Justyna Orłowska, High Representative of the Prime Minister for GovTech; Plenipotentiary of the Minister of Education and Science for Digital Transformation.

The initiative’s effects are expected to be visible already in the next tourist season. For more information, visit www.gov.pl/CyfrowaEuropaKarpat.
