PAIA invites for the next on-line lecture “Digging the UNESCO World Heritage Site: Polish past and present research in Nea Paphos on Cyprus” by Prof. Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka from Jagiellonian University in Kraków and University of Warsaw.

Paphos

Paphos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Cyprus, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1980. It served as a capital of the island for several centuries, so research in this area is essential for learning about the history of this part of the Mediterranean.

Polish archaeological research in the ancient city of Nea Paphos began in 1965 on the initiative of Professor Kazimierz Michałowski. The main achievements of research in the residential district of the city (Maloutena) will be briefly presented, where, inter alia, the famous mosaics of the Villa of Theseus and the House of Aion have been uncovered. Then, the most important results of research works in the public space of Agora situated in the central part of the city will be shown.

The main part of lecture focus on the currently implemented (from 2020) project entitled “MA-P Maloutena and Agora in the layout of Paphos: Modelling the cityscape of the capital of Hellenistic and Roman Cyprus.” It is carried out by the Joint Expedition of the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow in cooperation with the Warsaw University of Technology. The international and interdisciplinary project aims to reconstruct the 3D urban landscape of Paphos at different stages of its development using the latest modeling methods.
