Presentation of Lord Byron Medal to Ambassador Artur Lompart
09.05.2024
On April 29, the official ceremony of awarding the Lord Byron Medal to the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Greece, Artur Lompart, took place at the Philhellenism Museum in Athens.
This award is granted by the Society of Hellenism and Philhellenism in collaboration with the Academy of Athens to people whose activities and daily work contribute to the promotion of philhellenism and its values. The event comprised musical performances and recitation of poems by Lord Byron.
As Ambassador Artur Lompart pointed out in his speech during the ceremony, the ideas of philhellenism are extremely close to him and over the last few years, through his actions, he has tried to promote knowledge and cultivate the memory of the philhellenic movement, which inspired Europeans and Poles to fight for independence. This was expressed, among others, by activities supporting the commemoration of Polish Philhellenes, whose devotion and sacrifice in the Greek War of Independence are strongly appreciated and remembered by Greeks to this day. The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Athens cooperates in this respect with many entities in Greece and in Poland, and one of the results of this work is the recently published volume "Greek War of Independence and Polish Philhellenism (1821-1833)", edited together with the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the Faculty Artes Liberales of the University of Warsaw.
During the event, the Lord Byron Medal was also awarded to the Ambassador of Hungary, Erik Haupt, who was wrapping up his diplomatic mission in Greece.
