The Ambassador of the Republic of Poland laid a wreath at the Monument to the Heroes and recalled the participation of Poles in the fights for the liberation of Greece, especially those who died in the Battle of Peta. Speaking about the Greek Revolution, the Ambassador emphasized that „the idea of freedom illuminated the path of many Poles, who arrived in Greece to help the revolutionaries. Thanks to the efforts of researchers we know today the names of almost fifty Polish soldiers, who in the period 1821-1831 served in Greece in the battalions of the Philhellenes and were distinguished for their bravery in the battles with the Ottoman oppressors. Many of them sacrificed their lives, like the “Magnificent Twelve” who died  heroically in the Battle of Peta and soaked this soil with their blood along with other foreign and local fighters. Today we honour their memory”.
