Tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Peta
12.07.2022
Ambassador Artur Lompart participated in the annual ceremonies dedicated to the memory of fighters killed in the Battle of Peta, which took place 200 years ago, on July 4, 1822, and was one of the most dramatic moments of the Greek Revolution.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Poland laid a wreath at the Monument to the Philhellenes and recalled the participation of Poles in the fights for the liberation of Greece, especially those who died in the Battle of Peta. Speaking about the Greek national uprising, the Ambassador recalled that "all the nations of Europe united under one flag and fought against barbarism and tyranny, in defense of common values: freedom, democracy, justice and human rights”. He also emphasized that today, 200 years after the Battle of Peta, the Ukrainian people must fight against Russia for their freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity, with the support of the international community, including Poland and Greece, for whom the slogan "Freedom or death" is still relevant .
The Director of the Philhellenism Museum in Athens, Constantinos Velentzas, drew attention to the transnational Philhellenic movement that swept Europe after the outbreak of the Greek Revolution in 1821, and described the Battle of Peta as "the cornerstone of the European unification".
