Visiting Exhibition of Furniture Inspired by cultures of Poland and Iran
28.01.2021
During this week, we had the pleasure to present our furniture exhibition to the public. Representatives of the academic community, industrial design students, journalists and diplomats visited the display at the Embassy. It was also an opportunity to discuss about the presence of Iranian art in the European culture and the possible influence of Poles, who lived in Iran, on the Iranian furniture and textile industry.
As a part of a joint academic project between University of Tehran and Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tehran, students of the Industrial Design Department were invited to design pieces of furniture that would combine the elements of Iranian and Polish cultures. 11 projects were produced which are now on display in the Embassy of Poland.
The idea was to showcase the richness of these two cultures in a new way. The students were invited to search through literature, films, artistic works to find distinctive stories or motives that could be combined together. Through synthetizing such elements and giving them a more universal dimension, with the use of modern technologies they created a fully functional, design-intensive furniture. The result is also a rediscovery of so many commonalities between the two cultures which in a surprisingly harmonious blend were translated into practical forms.
During 2020 the students struggled not only with ideas and materials, but also with the pandemic situation which interfered with the learning process, drastically limiting their access to sources and contact with teachers. Despite all the headwinds the project was successfully finalized and we are all the more pleased to invite the public to see its results.
