Polish Medical Mission in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region
14.12.2020
In partnership with Terre des Hommes Italy, PMM operates a mobile clinic and 2 dental care units, reaching out to more than 24,000 Syrian refugees and displaced Iraqi citizens. Internal, pediatric, pharmaceutic care is provided for Baharka & Harsham camps’ residents. Most of the patients suffer from hearing & visual impairment, consequences of chronic diseases or disability of or reduced mobility. Dental units operate in Baharka & Qushtapa camps. Before the PMM / TdH arrival the camp residents were deprived of dental care (the project co-financed by the MFA of Poland).
Only in October 2020 the mobile clinic treated 787 residents of Baharka & Harsham camps (including 485 women). 247 children received pediatric treatment. Most of the patients suffered from respiratory & upper respiratory tract disorders (227 cases), throat & ear diseases (181 cases), gastrological disorders (98), dermatological diseases (70) and urinary inflammations (50).
The laboratory operating in Baharka camp conducts 5-10 tests daily for female patients, the most typical being: CBC (Complete Blood Count), GUE (General Urine Examination), pregnancy test & lipid profile (cholesterol).
Moreover, the local partner (TdH) has been frequently asked to perform tests for other medical entities i.e. Zhyan Organization, Barzani Charity Foundation & MRDS since they don’t possess their own laboratories. Such tests have been done for free.
