Poland extends border controls to April 13, 2020 and limits personal movement until April 11, 2020

The Government of Poland announced on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, that it had extended the control of all people crossing Poland's borders to April 13, 2020. The entry of foreigners into the country will be banned until April 11, 2020. Only Poles wishing to return home, their spouses and children, holders of Karta Polaka, diplomats and persons with the right of permanent or temporary residence in the Republic of Poland or holders of a valid work permit will be allowed to enter the country. The decision immediately came into effect.

Coronavirus

The Government of Poland also has decided to:

  • Introduce the state of epidemic that gives the appropriate state authorities new powers, but also imposes new obligations on all of the citizens;
  • Increase the penalties for breaking the quarantine to 30 000 PLN;
  • Ban all public gatherings, events, and reunions. Groups of only two people will be allowed in public (except for families);
  • Public transport will continue to operate, but no more than half of the available seats may be taken at any given time, i.e., if there are 70 seats on a bus, only 35 people may be on the bus at the same time;
  • You may be fined up to 5,000 PLN for violating the restrictions on public movement and gatherings.  Restrictions on movement do not apply to the following: commuting to work, traveling to purchase goods or perform services connected to your employment, volunteer work , essential activities of daily life, such as shopping for food and medicine, seeing a doctor, taking care of relatives, or walking your dog, religious events of up to five people, but the government recommends participating in religious services online or via radio or TV);
  • Some businesses may remain open, but strict social distancing must be strictly followed.

Previously announced restrictions regarding schools and shopping centers remain in effect. Schools remain closed until Easter, lessons will be carried out via e-learning platforms. All large shopping centers are closed, except for grocery stores and pharmacies.  Restaurants and bars are closed, except for delivery and take-out services. All entertainment and cultural venues, such as theaters and museums, and all schools and universities remain closed until further notice.
