Representatives of the Visegrád Group Embassies and the EU Delegation in Nairobi jointly visited a macadamia nut factory
17.02.2021
The factory operates under the aegis of the Kenyan organization TenSensesAfrica, local partner in the project aimed at strengthening the production capacities of cashew and macadamia nuts in the Kenyan counties of Lamu, Kilifi and Kwale. This initiative is implemented jointly by the Member States of the Visegrád Group and the European Union within the EU Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF).
On February 16, 2021, representatives of the Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish diplomatic missions based in Nairobi as well as the Delegation of the European Union in Nairobi went to the macadamia nut processing factory in Athi River, that is run by the Kenyan organization TenSensesAfrica, responsible for implementing the first ever joint development initiative of the Visegrád Group aimed at strengthening the local production of cashew and macadamia nuts in the coastal counties of Kilifi, Kwale and Lamu.
Within the project coordinated by Slovak Aid and financed by the EU Trust Fund for Africa, Kenyan farmers are being trained and equipped with nut seedlings, which give them the opportunity to dynamise production. In the long term, the project will therefore contribute to employment growth in the agricultural sector, and will also allow Kenya to increase the export volume of cashew and macadamia nuts. The above is of particular importance in the context of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated socioeconomic crisis, which has affected many countries and households in Africa.
The aforementioned project is coming to an end in September this year.
The meeting between the representatives of the diplomatic missions of Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and the European Union with TenSensesAfrica took place the day after the 30th anniversary of the Visegrád Group, celebrated on February 15, 2021. Poland currently holds the group's 12-month rotating presidency, which it will hand over to Hungary on July 1, 2021.
