The European Union - Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement signed.

18.12.2023

In order to increase the volume of trade and investment flows, Kenya and the European Union signed the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) on December 18, 2023.

European Union - Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at the ceremony that the EPA would fully open the European market to products from Kenya. President Der Leyen noted that the EPA is the first agreement with a developing country to reflect the EU's new approach to trade and sustainable development. It provides a platform to support job creation on both sides, as well as targeted cooperation to improve Kenya's economic development. Kenyan President William Ruto said Kenyan exporters will now be able to make long-term plans based on predictable, duty-free, quota-free access to a high-quality export market. He added that the signing of the EPA is also a signal to the world that Kenya is ready to produce and export high-quality, premium products to Europe and around the world. The agreement addresses Kenya's development needs by providing a longer period to gradually open its market, and includes specific safeguards for agriculture, food security and emerging industries.
