The exhibition: “Poles in Africa in the years 1942-1952” on the occasion of the National Independence Day
11.11.2021
On 11th November at the Muthaiga Country Club in Nairobi on the occasion of the National Independence Day, an exhibition about Poles in Africa in the years 1942-1952 was organized. The event was attended by the Polish community abroad, ambassadors of EU countries, and Kenyan friends.
The ceremony was an opportunity to present the relations between Poles and Africa relatively unknown to the general public. The historical context was presented by Maria Sapieha-Beckmann, granddaughter of the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1920-21 Eustachy Sapieha. Her personal reference to the family history (Minister E. Sapieha was during World War II the Polish Red Cross plenipotentiary for Central and East Africa on behalf of the London government and responsible for the organization of Polish settlements) was received very favourably by the gathered audience. The exhibition aroused great interest among the visitors.
Next year we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the arrival of Polish refugees to Africa, and therefore a number of projects are planned to commemorate the presence of Poles on the continent.
