Unveiling of the plaque commemorating architects Zbigniew Trzebiński and Tibor Gáll in Mombasa

On July 11, 2021, the ambassadors of Poland and Hungary unveiled a plaque in the Tamarind Village hotel and restaurant complex in Mombasa, commemorating a duo of architects – Mr. Zbigniew Trzebiński and Mr. Tibor Gáll, who jointly designed several dozen hotels in Kenya in the second half of the 20th century.
The ceremony took place in one of the facilities created by the duo of designers, and was attended by, among others, representatives of the Polish community living on the Kenyan coast, the Hungarian community, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Mombasa, Mr. Jones Skipper Onyino, the Honorary Consul of Hungary and the daughter of the late Mr. Trzebiński, Ms. Gabriela Trzebinski. Representatives of the local authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kenya were also present.
Mr. Zbigniew "Sbish" Trzebiński was born in Gdynia in 1934 and died in Mombasa in 2005. Like many other Poles at that time, he was deported to Siberia during World War II. With his mother, he travelled to Great Britain via Persia, Palestine and Egypt. After graduating in 1958 from England's Polytechnic School of Architecture, Trzebiński moved to Kenya and worked in Mombasa until his death. He significantly contributed to the development of his country of settlement. Together with his Hungarian partner, Mr. Tibor Gaál, he was the architect and decorator of many hotels in various regions of Kenya, especially on the coast.
