Polish Embassy and Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve Collaborate again to Replenish Lebanon's Depleted Natural Resources
11.06.2023
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Lebanon and Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve are proud to announce their continued collaboration on the Polish Embassy reforestation site at the reserve. This initiative, building upon the success of the initial project started in May, involved a month later, diverse groups such as the Polish diaspora, tourists, and local organizations including the Lebanon Reforestation Initiative, Polish Fenicia Foundation, Lebanese Association for Migratory Birds, Lebanon Mountain Trail, and eco-friendly influencer Bruno Tabbal.
The event started with a welcoming speech by Przemysław Niesiołowski, Ambassador of Poland to Lebanon, Aneta Ananicz, Consul of Poland in Lebanon and Sandra Koussa Saba, Director of the reserve.
The primary objective of this ongoing initiative is to replenish Lebanon's depleted natural resources. The project focuses on preserving and enhancing biodiversity within Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve, the oldest national reserve in Lebanon. The reserve is home to endemic flora species and serves as a crucial migratory route for birds between Europe and Africa, making its ecological balance restoration vital.
This collaboration also highlights the historical presence and contributions of Polish nationals in Lebanon since the 19th century. By establishing the Polish Embassy reforestation site at Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve, the embassy expresses gratitude to the Lebanese people for sheltering over 6000 Polish refugees during World War II and recognizes their invaluable contributions to Lebanon's development in various fields.
The Polish Embassy reforestation site provides a platform for the Polish community in Lebanon to unite and contribute to sustainable reforestation efforts. The embassy and its partners encourage Polish tourists and birdwatchers worldwide to participate by adopting trees within the project framework, facilitating the expansion of the Polish Embassy reforestation site and transforming it into an attractive destination for Polish tourists in Lebanon.
In addition to environmental preservation, the project aims to raise awareness among the Lebanese public and international community about the crucial importance of preserving Lebanon's natural resources. Long-term initiatives and support for local non-profit organizations dedicated to environmental preservation are part of the project's strategy to foster a culture of sustainability in the region.
The first phase of the initiative was launched on Polish Diaspora Day and in celebration of the 3rd May Constitution Day of the Republic of Poland.
To ensure the lasting impact of their contributions, the participants have committed to monitoring the growth of the trees they planted. The geolocation data of the seedlings has been recorded.
Aside from the environmental benefits, this collaboration between the Polish Embassy and Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve is expected to have a positive impact on the region's economy. By enhancing the reserve's tourism potential, the project will create job opportunities and contribute to the area's economic development, benefiting the local community.
The event concluded with a traditional lunch in support of local women.
