#StandWithUkraine! Photo exibition "Poland and Lithuania for Ukraine"
04.05.2022
On May 3rd we celebrated the anniversary of the adoption of Europe’s first written modern constitution and the world’s second (after the US)! The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s Constitution was adopted in 1791 by the Sejm (parliament) and signed by the King. It was an attempt to reform the country and preserve its independence after the Commonwealth‘s first partition by Austria, Prussia and Russia (in 1772). This progressive document introduced, among other things, a tripartite separation of powers and reformed the existing political system, ensuring better equality to representatives of different nationalities in the country.
Amazingly, contemporary events show that the Commonwealth’s best traditions are still in force today, exactly 231 years later, as Russian aggression shows that strong bonds of solidarity still tie Poles, Lithuanians and Ukrainians together. Poland and Lithuania belong to the most engaged countries in supporting Ukraine. Warsaw and Vilnius were advocating for Ukrainian EU membership perspective long before the country’s brutal invasion by Russia, and they are totally devoted to supporting Ukraine for the duration of the war.
This photo exhibition sends precisely the same message. It shows how Poles and Lithuanians have enthusiastically plunged into helping their Ukrainian neighbors, inviting them into their homes, delivering meals, personal necessities and medical care, volunteering at reception points on the border, in train stations, or at refugee centres. These pictures also show how the Polish and Lithuanian authorities have done their utmost to create conditions for Ukrainian refugees to feel safe and sound. They are providing accommodation, food, social security benefits, healthcare, access to the educational system, the right to work legally, and direct support for Ukrainian culture, artists and athletes.
