Sławomir Nitras appointed Minister of Sport and Tourism

On 13 December 2023, at the request of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Andrzej Duda appointed Sławomir Nitras as Minister of Sport and Tourism.
At the Presidential Palace, Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his cabinet ministers were handed over their letters of appointment and took up their offices.

Sławomir Witold Nitras – Polish political scientist and politician, member of the 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th terms of the Sejm, member of the 7th term of the European Parliament, chief advisor to Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz in 2014–2015.
In 1998 he graduated from the University of Szczecin, Humanities Department, earning a Master’s Degree in Political Science.
In 1997–1998 he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Political Science and Philosophy of the University of Silesia.
In 1998–1999 he served as Director of the Cabinet of the Voivode of Koszalińskie Voivodeship.
In 1999–2002, he was a member of the board of the mining company Koszalińskie Kopalnie Surowców Mineralnych "Kruszywa Koszalin" S.A. He ran a private business for 3 years thereafter.
In 2001 he joined the Civic Platform (Polish: Platforma Obywatelska, PO), sitting on the party’s national board from 2006 to 2010 and serving as vice-chairman of the party’s West Pomeranian regional chapter. From December 2003 to October 2013 he chaired the PO chapter for the city of Szczecin.
In the 2005 and 2007 parliamentary elections he was elected as a PO candidate to represent Szczecin in the 5th and 6th terms of the Sejm. In 2007, he received 65,993 votes (the best individual result in the district). During both terms, he was a member of the State Treasury Committee; in the 6th term he also worked in the Economy Committee and the "Friendly Government" Extraordinary Committee.
He was elected to the European Parliament in 2009 representing the Gorzów district, where he appeared first on the list of candidates, obtaining 107,413 votes.
He won a seat in the 2015 Polish parliamentary elections (8th term of the Sejm), receiving 20,930 votes. He was appointed Chairman of the Delegation of the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. He also served as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation Committee. In March 2018 he was announced a joint candidate of PO and Nowoczesna parties for the office of mayor of Szczecin in local elections held that year.
He was elected to the Sejm again in the 2019 parliamentary elections as a candidate of the Civic Coalition, receiving 78,513 votes, the best individual result in the district.
Prior to the 2023 parliamentary elections he was the coordinator of the Citizens' Election Control campaign joined by over 60,000 people. In the elections, he was re-elected to the Sejm, receiving 90,720 votes. In the 10th term of the Sejm he sat in the Foreign Affairs Committee.
He was appointed member of the Council of Ministers on 12 December 2023 and was sworn in by the President as Minister of Sport and Tourism on 13 December 2023.
