03.01.2025

- Today, we face an unprecedented need to defend this collectively agreed security order. As the Helsinki Final Act marks its 50th anniversary, Finland will consistently stress the principles outlined in this founding document of the OSCE. When Russia challenges the foundations of our shared security, the rest of us must stand up for them, and stand tall – underlined Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, the new OSCE Chairperson-in-Office.

Minister Valtonen emphasised that Ukraine will remain a priority for the Chairpersonship in 2025. Supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence will be central to OSCE's activities.
Finish Chairpersonship of the OSCE will also work on following topics:

  • strengthening the Organisation’s operational capabilities;
  • highlighting the OSCE’s work on the ground in Eastern Europe, South-Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and in Central Asia;
  • enhancing collaboration among societal actors, including authorities, local organisations, and the private sector on crisis response and recovery;
  • bolstering collaboration with civil society, including through increased engagement of women and youth in building peace and security.

Finland's Chairpersonship of the OSCE will be officially inaugurated at the OSCE Permanent Council meeting in Vienna on 23 January 2025.
