25.10.2022

Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau concluded a visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, where as the Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, he attended the annual OSCE Mediterranean Conference. This year’s edition was titled “Advancing security and co-operation in the Mediterranean: fostering dialogue with the OSCE Mediterranean Partners for Co-operation”.

Minister Rau took the floor during the opening session along with OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid, Jordan’s foreign minister Ayman Safadi, and North Macedonia’s foreign minister Bujar Osmani.

“There is no safe Europe without a stable and prosperous Mediterranean region. Our nations deserve to live in peace and dignity in a world governed by international law and mutual commitments. OSCE is ready to implement these goals together with our Mediterranean partners,” said the chief of Polish diplomacy.

“Faced with similar problems and challenges, we are aware that a comprehensive approach to security is the right strategy. We should have the courage to put forward common solutions and joint answers. Only then will we be better equipped and prepared for the future,” added the OSCE’s current Chairman-in-Office.

Having opened the Conference, Minister Rau together with Secretary General Schmid and Minister Osmani participated in an audience with King of Jordan Abdullah II. The officials discussed cooperation within the OSCE Mediterranean Partnership in the context of threats posed by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine to the regions neighbouring with the OSCE’s participating states.

The Mediterranean Partnership for Co-operation is one of two OSCE cooperation formats – along with the Asian Partnership – with countries which over the years have developed special relations with the Organisation (the Mediterranean Partnership for Co-operation comprises Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, and Tunisia). In line with the OSCE’s schedule, the Group is presided by the state which takes over OSCE chairmanship in the following year, therefore, in 2022 the Group is presided by North Macedonia.
