Meeting with Stanisław Lem over Arabic Coffee

On the occasion of 100th birthday anniversary of the renowned Polish science-fiction writer Stanisław Lem, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Doha, in collaboration with Fire Station Artist in Residence, on 6th October 2021 hosted the “Meeting with Stanisław Lem over Arabic Coffee”. The event was attended by notable guests such as: Mr. Khalifa Al Obaidli, Director of Fire Station, Ms. Tan Huism, Executive Director of Qatar National Library, representatives of the Doha Film Institute and Qatar Museums Authority as well as representatives of the Polish community professionally associated with the cultural and scientific activities.

In order to familiarize the audience with the phenomenon of Stanisław Lem’s work the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Doha prepared a small exhibition, which highlighted biographies of Stanisław Lem and Daniel Mróz, the illustrator of Lem’s books, as well as artwork from his science-fiction novel “The Cyberiad: Fables for the Cybernetic Age.”

 The event also showcased two short movies based on Lem’s stories: “The Room” directed by Krzysztof Jankowski and “The Mask” directed by Hanka Brulińska.

 In addition to the cinematographic component Mr. Hatif Janabi, a renowned Polish-Arabic translator shared the story behind his recent undertaking which led to the publication of Lem’s best-known novel entitled “Solaris” in Arabic.

 The event was covered by the Qatari daily Gulf Times.
