The 85th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II

Westerplatte

On 1 September 1939, at 4.40am, the Germans attacked Polish city Wieluń without a declaration of war. A few minutes later, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein shelled the Polish Military Transit Depot at Westerplatte, defended by the crew under the command of Major Henryk Sucharski and Captain Franciszek Dąbrowski. Thus began the largest world war in history, lasting from 1 September 1939 to 2 September 1945; in Europe until 8 May 1945. The warfare covered almost all of Europe, eastern and south-eastern Asia, northern Africa, parts of the Middle East and all oceans. Today we pay respect to those who suffered under Nazi German and Soviet terror.
