04.05.2022

A joint operation of the Polish Border Guard and the Internal Security Agency (ABW) has led to detention of individuals who organized illegal crossing of the border of the Republic of Poland for migrants coming from the Middle East and Africa.

Officers of the Border Guard and ABW detained three men involved in smuggling migrants to Poland and then on to Western European countries, through the so called Balkan route, as well as from Belarus. The preliminary investigation revealed that the individuals detained were responsible for facilitating illegal border-crossing for dozens of people.

Between 19 and 22 April Polish services detained 2 Afghan nationals and one Tajik national. One of the Afghan nationals was placed for 3 months in a closed and guarded centre for foreigners. The court stated that the man could pose a threat to public order and national security. The second Afghan national was charged with facilitating the illegal stay of Afghan migrants in the territory of Poland.

As far as a Tajik national is concerned, he was charged with organizing illegal border-crossing of migrants into Poland en route to Western Europe. At the request of the Prosecutor’s Office he was placed under pre-trial detention for 3 months.

Last week’s detention is a result of close cooperation between the Border Guard and Internal Security Agency in preventing and combating illegal migration, but also in recognizing and countering a wide range of terrorist threats.
