Internal Security Agency foils a terrorist attack in Poland
14.07.2023
Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) has detained a man, who planned a terrorist attack on buildings of the Polish state institutions. He was acting in collusion with other individuals claiming to be the representatives and supporters of the ISIS. The arrest took place on June 16, 2023, in Lower Silesia in southwestern Poland.
Within the execution of its statutory tasks, the ABW became aware that a 18-year-old Polish national was planning a terrorist attack. The man had converted to Islam in late 2022. He would admire the likes of Osama bin Laden, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi and Anwar Al-Awlaki and be inspired by the activities of the ISIS both as a terrorist organization and a caliphate. At some point he started collecting information and materials needed to craft an explosive belt which he intended to use in an attack on a state office building in Poland.
The suspect was detained on June 16, 2023. In his place of residence the officers of the ABW found evidence of the planned attack. Searches were also carried out in the places of residence of individuals who had maintained contact with the detainee and had been aware of his intentions.
The suspect was presented with charges of participation in the activities of an organized criminal group whose objective was to commit a terrorist act. He was also charged with planning to carry out a life- or health-threatening act affecting a number of people or an act with potential to cause massive damage to property. Upon the motion of the prosecution office, the court ordered for the suspect to be remanded in custody for the period of three months.
This case is of an evolving nature.
