At the beginning of September, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh organised a series of events commemorating General Stanisław Sosabowski and the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade which was established in September 1941 at Kincraig Point in Fife.
The events were attended by the command of the Polish 6th Airborne Brigade from Krakow, including: Brigadier General Michał Strzelecki, the British 16th Air Assault Brigade Combat Team, including: Major General Adrian Freer OBE, the representative of King Charles III in Fife: Lord-Lieutenant Robert Balfour, great-grandson of General Sosabowski: prof. Hal Sosabowski, as well as by numerous representatives of the local authorities, the Polish community and Polish scouts.
1st Independent Parachute Brigade was one of the world's first assault units, the predecessor of special forces. Its commander was General Stanisław Sosabowski. General Sosabowski together with the Parachute Brigade fought at Arnhem in Operation Market Garden in September 1944, sustaining heavy losses. In recognition of their achievements, the Queen of the Netherlands awarded the Parachute Brigade with the Military William Order - the highest Dutch military decoration. There are many places in Fife related to the Polish paratroopers who were stationed in this region. Many of them settled and started families in Fife after the war.
