Hubert Hurkacz becomes second Polish male tennis player to reach Grand Slam singles semi-final

09.07.2021

Hubert Hurkacz became only the second Polish male tennis player to reach a Grand Slam singles semi-final after his run at this year’s Wimbledon.

Hurkacz, who made the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in London, beat such players as World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer – a player considered one of the best of all time. He lost in the semi-finals to World No. 9 Matteo Berrettini in four sets.

Polish Embassy’s Chargés d'Affaires a.i. Agnieszka Kowalska watched courtside Hurkacz’s quarter-final against Federer and semi-final against Berrettini.

Thanks to his run at Wimbledon, Hurkacz has moved up the ATP rankings to World No. 11. It was his furthest run at a Grand Slam.

Hurkacz was the most successful out of the Poles competing at this year’s tournament: Łukasz Kubot and his Brazilian partner Marcelo Melo reached the quarter-final stage in doubles. Former French Open champion Iga Świątek reached the fourth round, while Magda Linette ended her tournament in the third round in singles. The doubles pairing of Magda Linette and Alicja Rosolska were knocked out of the competition in the first round.
