Polish Books in Scottish Primary Schools
30.03.2024
In March, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh donated Polish books to two Scottish primary schools.
The "Polish Books in Scottish Schools" campaign builds on the rich Polish-Scottish historical relations dating back to the early 16th century. As for the books, a significant collection of Polish works of 19th-century literature and culture, called "Bibliotheca Polonica", can be found in the Signet Library in Edinburgh. They were given as a token of gratitude by Polish noble families whose sons came to Scotland to study economics.
The books donated to Scottish primary schools by the Consulate General of Poland in Edinburgh include English editions of Polish authors, such as the comic book "Tytus, Romek, and A'Tomek”, "Maps” by Aleksandra and Daniel Mizieliński, "Sugar, you Rascal" by Waldemar Cichoń, a collection of fairy tales "Children Like It Most", "King Matt the First" by Janusz Korczak, and many other titles.
Kamila Lutostańska from the Consulate General of Poland in Edinburgh visited James Gillespie's Primary School, during the assembly on the occasion of Language Week Scotland. She presented the books by Polish authors to the new school library. The following school visited was Frogston Primary School, where an Inclusion Hub for families from national minorities is currently being built. Since Polish children attend the school, this institution was also presented with Polish-language books and educational materials for young people.
We hope that Polish books will become a permanent fixture in Scottish schools.
