On 8 February, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London hosted a sweet reception in celebration of "Fat Thursday", where guests enjoyed traditional doughnuts (pączki) and angel wings (faworki).

A sweet reception in celebration of "Fat Thursday"

Every year, on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday, Poles celebrate "Fat Thursday" and indulge in eating sweet and greasy treats. Statistically, every Pole eats two and a half doughnuts on that day, which constitutes 100 million across the entire nation. The passion for this sweet good is indeed understandable as Poland's love affair with doughnuts dates back to the 16th century.

Ambassadors of Iceland, Latvia, Moldova, and Sweden participated in the event alongside British partners and close friends of the Embassy. The informal nature of the reception served as a perfect opportunity to discuss ongoing projects as well as network with potential new connections.

The event was also attended by Ren Behar - a distinguished British food writer of Polish descent and the author of "The Sweet Polish Kitchen: A Celebration of Home Baking and Nostalgic Treats". Soon to be released in the UK, the book takes readers from everyday baking to celebratory gatherings, offering a comprehensive and modern exploration of Polish sweet treats and drawing on influences from across Central and Eastern Europe.

When addressing the attendees, Ambassador Professor Piotr Wilczek highlighted the history of these unique pastries which are just a glimpse into Poland's culinary delights. He noted that the taste of the world-renowned pączek might be the first step towards a greater Polish culinary adventure.
