Albania

Diplomatic relations between Poland and Republic of Albania were established in 1937.

Political cooperation

Polish-Albanian bilateral relations have a relatively long history. Even before the Second World War, Poland had a diplomatic representative in Albania. Władysław Gűnther-Schwarzburg, who in 1937 was accredited for the area of Albania. In 1938, he took part in the wedding of the Albanian King Zogu I and the Hungarian princess Geraldine Apponyi. In 1945, Poland resumed diplomatic relations with Albania, and in 1954 diplomatic missions were raised to the rank of embassies (this is the highest rank of diplomatic representation).

Since 1990, mutual relations are very good, there are no contentious issues. High-level visits and political consultations are  regularly held. Poland supported Albania's admission to NATO and supports Albania's aspiration to join the EU

Cultural cooperation

Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Poland and the Government of the Republic of Albania on cultural and scientific cooperation, signed in May 1993.

Cooperation in the field of science

In the 50s of the last century first Albanian students went to Poland. After the democratic changes in our countries ministries of education and science signed an agreement, under which the Polish government offers free of charge studies for a specified number of Albanian at Polish universities. Each year tens of students start their study in Poland. At the moment more than 100 Albanian students continue studies in Polish universities and higher education schools in various fields, including economics, computer science, medicine, applied technical studies, social studies and arts. Albanian graduates of Polish universities return to the country and use their knowledge for the good of the country, taking jobs as high-class experts in the banking sector, medicine, public administration and various branches of the economy of Albania.

In Poland the interest of young people in Balkan studies is growing thanks to the activity of various research centers, especially universities which offer Balkanistic studies, such as the Warsaw University, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, the Mikołaj Kopernik University in Torun,  the Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin. The number of publications related to Albanian issues and the region is constantly growing. More and more students and researchers visit Albania within the framework of language and academic interships.
