Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney

Piotr Rakowski was born on June 16, 1973, in Malbork. He is a graduate of the Legal Studies Department at the Nicolas Copernicus University in Toruń. He also completed Postgraduate Studies in Comparative Constitutional Law at the Central European University in Budapest and Postgraduate Management Studies at the Warsaw School of Economics. In 2007 he obtained his SJD in EU law at the Cardinal Wyszynski University in Warsaw.

He began his career at the Ministry of Interior and Administration in January 1999, in the European Integration Department. He was a member of the EU accession negotiation team in the area of “Justice and Home Affairs”. Since 2003 he worked first in the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the EU in Brussels and subsequently in the General Secretariat the EU Council as seconded national expert. After his return he took managerial positions in the Ministry of Interior in 2008 and then he transferred permanently to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he was a head of unit in the European Policy Department. During Polish and Danish Presidencies to the EU Council he chaired various committees and groups.

In 2003 Piotr Rakowski moved to Ireland where he took the position of the Deputy Head of Mission. He engaged in various activities related to Polish diaspora there, including the organization and management of 3 editions of the PolskaÉire Festival – the annual nationwide integration set of events.

In 2017 Piotr Rakowski started his work for the Legal and Treaty Department of the Ministry of Interior and Administration. Between 2017-2020 and 2023-2024 he held the function of the Senior Arctic Official by the Arctic Council. Between 2020 and 2021 he was employed as Director-General in the Office of the General Counsel of the Republic of Poland.

In 2002, he was appointed a civil service officer. In 2014, for his merits in public service, he was awarded the Bronze Cross of Merit.

After the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, he was a volunteer at the Folkowisko Foundation and, among others, he traveled with humanitarian aid to Lviv and smaller towns in the Lviv region. In the past, he worked as a volunteer at the Sue Ryder Foundation, the Campaign Against Homophobia Foundation and the Ocalenie Foundation.

Piotr is a music enthusiast and an uncontrollable collector of CDs and vinyl records.

He is married and has a grown up son.

On October 12, 2024, he was appointed to the position of Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Sydney and in five Pacific states of additional accreditation (Fiji, Papua-New Guinea, Nauru, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands).
