129th anniversary of the brith of General Stanisław Maczek: at the Polish Military Cemetery in Lommel a tribute was paid to the CO of the 1st Armoured Division.
At the Polish Military Cemetery in Lommel Ambassador Artur Orzechowski with the delegation paid tribute to the CO of the 1st Armoured Division.
In September1939, he commanded the only fully operational motorised unit of the Polish Army, the 10th Motorized Cavalry Brigade. However, he is remembered mainly as an exceptional CO of the 1st Armoured Division on WW2 Western Front.
Gen. Maczek commanded the 1st Armoured Division until the end of European hostilities and was promoted to major-general. After the capitulation of Germany he went on to command the Polish I Corps and became commanding officer of all Polish forces in the United Kingdom until their demobilization in 1947.
