Ambassador Rafał Siemianowski paid tribute to Jean-Marie De Baerdemaeker, the late Honorary Consul of Poland in Ghent

The funeral of Jean-Marie De Baerdemaeker, a great friend of Poland in Belgium, took place in Essene near Ghent on Saturday, November 27th, 2021.

During the ceremony, Rafał Siemianowski, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Kingdom of Belgium read the letter addressed to the family of the late consul by Zbigniew Rau, Poland’s Foreign Affairs Minister. “A very active consul, he always participated in the life of Poles not only in Ghent, but everywhere in Flanders.  For many years he was instrumental in commemorating the Polish pilots liberating Ghent in 1945. He also coordinated many events marking important anniversaries.(…) He was always there to help and advice consuls in Brussels in many difficult cases brought up by our compatriots. We could always count on him.”– wrote Minister Rau.

Jean-Marie De Baerdemaeker was the Honorary Consul of Poland in Ghent since 2006.

He died in Essene, Belgium last Saturday, November 20th, 2021 at the age of 75.
