Invitation to the Commemoration of the Liberation of Flanders in Lommel
13.09.2024
On September 29th, a ceremony will take place at the Polish Military Cemetery in Lommel, Limburg, to commemorate the role of General Stanisław Maczek’s soldiers in the liberation of Belgium.
Eighty years ago this autumn, the 1st Armoured Division, led by General Maczek, embarked on a victorious march through Belgium, liberating town after town from German occupation. Unfortunately, many young Poles gave their lives fighting across Flanders—257 of them are buried at the Polish Military Cemetery in Lommel.
To honour their sacrifice, the Polish community in Belgium, together with the local authorities of Lommel, gathers at the cemetery each year to pay tribute to the fallen and pray for peace. The commemoration will be attended by representatives from the Polish Embassy in Brussels, Belgian authorities, including those from the City of Lommel, members of various Polish diaspora organisations, families of veterans, and students from Polish and Polish diaspora schools.
We warmly invite Poles living in Belgium, along with your Belgian friends, to join this special event and learn more about the history of Polish soldiers in Belgium.
The event will be conducted in Polish, Dutch, and English.
