The Tribute to the Polish Soldiers of WWII During the 77. Anniversary of the Liberation of Belgium
03.11.2021
This September and October – like every year - numerous cities and villages across Belgium commemorated the victorious trail of the General Maczek’s First Armoured Division
“Today we are going back in time. But we never look only at that past. The reason we are here together today, is that the horror for which these Polish heroes lost their lives will never happen again.” - said, Bob Nijs, the mayor of Lommel, at the opening of this year’s commemoration at the biggest Polish military cemetery in Belgium. This year’s commemoration in Lommel on September 26th gathered not only Belgians and Poles living in Belgium but also a number of guests from Poland including the 11th Armoured Division from Żagań and some families of the Maczek soldiers.
The representatives of our Embassy were honored to take part in so many moving ceremonies across Belgium including in Roeselare, Charleroi, Antwerp, Maldegem, Ghent, De Klinge, Silly and Stekene. We were proud to see that these ceremonies gather more and more Belgians and Poles of many generations. We would like to thank you to the Belgian municipalities and to the Polish diaspora in Belgium for their commitment to remember Polish heroes. #Never forget!
