60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Poland and Cyprus
15.01.2021
60 years ago, on 15th January 1961 Poland and Cyprus established diplomatic relations.
Poland was among the first countries which recognized the Republic of Cyprus after it had gained independence in 1960. The necessary diplomatic arrangements were concluded very smoothly and by the beginning of 1961 both our countries were ready to establish official relations. It was agreed that this solemn decision would come into force in the moment when the relevant information is published in the main daily newspapers of the two countries. It happened exactly 60 years ago – on 15th of January 1961.
The first Polish diplomatic representative was Zygmunt Dworakowski who presented his credentials to the President of Cyprus, HE Archbishop Makarios III on 14th of June 1961. Subsequently, Dimos Hadjimiltis was appointed the first Ambassador of Cyprus to Poland.
To celebrate the anniversary, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Nicosia, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, is planning to organize a series of political and cultural events. We very much hope that the epidemiological situation in Poland and Cyprus will allow us to proceed with their implementation.
We are pleased to present a joint Polish-Cypriot logo of the anniversary, designed by the Warsaw graphic artist Jerzy Burski.
