Commentary to data published by the Central Statistical Office - significant increase in construction and assembly production in 2019

According to the Central Statistical Office (CSO), the construction and assembly production in 2019 recorded a significant increase of 5.1% (in constant prices) in relation to the previous year. In relation to 2015, production in 2019 increased by 29.5%, while in comparison to 2010 it increased by 38.5%. The value of construction and assembly production in Poland in 2019 amounted to PLN 243.1 billion (current prices). Construction companies accounted for 94.7% of the total value.

Data, Analysis, Comment

With regards to the structure of works performed by construction companies according to the predominant type of activity, the largest share in 2019 included companies performing mainly specialist works - 45.6%, while at the same time recording the largest increase in sales y/y, amounting to 10.6%. The share of entities involved in the construction of buildings in the total construction and assembly production amounted to 29.4% (an increase of 5.7% y/y), and those specializing in the construction of civil engineering facilities - 25.0% (a decrease of production value by 3.7%).

Construction and assembly production made in 2019 by medium-sized companies, with more than 9 employees, was 5.7% higher (in current prices) than in the previous year and amounted to 111.5 billion PLN, which at the same time represented 48.4% of the total value of construction and assembly production produced by all construction companies. The remaining part was carried out by micro-enterprises, i.e. units with up to 9 employees.

More than half (52.3%) of the PLN 6.8 billion worth of construction and assembly production carried out in 2019 outside Poland included works carried out in Germany. Other significant markets with active Polish construction companies in 2019 include: Sweden (7.3%), Belgium (7.2%) and Norway (6.1%).
