Joining the capacities in the Polish – Taiwanese cooperation – the objective of the mission by Deputy Minister Grzegorz Piechowiak to Taiwan

The 10th Polish-Taiwanese Economic Forum, meetings with the representatives of the Taiwanese business, science and administration and signing the agreements on cooperation in the field of research and development, followed by the investment forums in Taipei and Kaohsiung – were the highlights of the agenda of the economic mission to Taiwan attended by Deputy Minister Grzegorz Piechowiak.

Semiconductors, electromobility and hydrogen – development of these sectors is to contribute to transformation of the Polish economy towards Industry 4.0. We wish to established close cooperation with Taiwan in these fields

Poland is a safe country and a continuously attractive location for the foreign investors. Our economy has proven its strength and stability many times.

Agreements on cooperation

The visit to Taipei triggered cooperation among others in the field of semiconductors. Joint research and development works will be carried out in the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Microelectronics and Photonics. Under the agreement made by and between the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and the Łukasiewicz Centre, the parties obliged themselves to perform R&D works focused on semiconductor devices. Another cooperation agreement was signed between the Institute of Environmental Protection - National Research Institute and the Taiwanese partner Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association.

Taiwan is a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing and Poland is one of the European leaders in production of parts for the automotive sector – this is one of the examples of synergy and strengthening of bilateral cooperation reflected by the agreement we have signed.

Joint works will be performed also by the Bureau for Chemical Substances and Taiwan Accreditation Foundation, which signed the agreement during the visit to Taipei.

Trade cooperation

Taiwan has been currently ranked seventh largest trade partner of Poland in the Asia and Pacific region. In 2021, the value of trade volume exceeded USD 2.6 billion, which translates into the increase by 33% y/y. Compared with the first two months of 2022, the bilateral trade grew by more than 50% against the last year. The Taiwanese companies continuing their investment activity in Poland have created nearly 3 thousand new jobs.

Investment cooperation

The Polish – Taiwanese Investment Forum demonstrated the bilateral capacity to cooperate in the high-tech area. Development of the semiconductor, electromobility and hydrogen sectors will boost transformation of the Polish economy towards Industry 4.0.

The potential strengthening of cooperation was also discussed by Deputy Minister Piechowiak and Deputy Minister of Economy Chern-Chyi Chen and the Head of National Development Council Ming-hsin Kung. 

We have many common economic goals that can be delivered. With a view to bilateral economic cooperation, our aim is to increase the investments and sustainable trade exchange, followed by cooperation in the field of electromobility and new technologies

In the Yawan Startup Terrace in Kaohsiung, Deputy Minister Piechowiak attended also the opening of the Polish – Taiwanese Investment Forum. This was the first Polish – Taiwanese event of such type organised outside of Taipei.

The delegation held also several meetings with the leading Taiwanese companies and visited the Hsinchu Scientific Park hosting more than 400 high-tech companies, mostly from the semiconductor, ITC and optoelectronic sectors.  During the discussions the issues of experiences sharing and transferring of good Taiwanese practices to Poland and intensifying the student and scientist exchange were brought up.
