Minister Buda discussed the food and energy security of the economies with the British Minister for International Trade

11.07.2022

Strengthening the Polish – British economic relations in trade and investments, including green technologies and the impact of war in Ukraine on the economy, followed by the support and reconstruction of this country are the leitmotivs of the today’s meeting between Minister Waldemar Buda and the British Minister for International Trade Anne-MarieTrevelyan.

The Ministers addressed also the issue of access to the market and the reform of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The Head of MEDT noted that with regard to the food crisis caused by the military aggression of Russian in Ukraine, Poland – as a food producer – can be self-sufficient.

We are following the global situation with deep concern. Our efforts are aimed at streamlining the agri-food supplies, including in particular in the Middle East

– stressed the Minister of Economic Development and Technology.

Independence of the economies from the Russian energy resources

According to Minister Buda, the Russian aggression in Ukraine resulted in trade sanctions and restrictions, in effect of which the prices of energy resources at global commodity exchanges have boosted even more.

We need to eliminate reliance of the national economies on fossil fuels imported from Russia and other sanctioned countries, such as coal, oil and gas as well as derivatives – LPG, diesel oil and petrol – as soon as possible. The point is to diversify the supplies, invest in production capacities, linear infrastructure and alternative fuels

– stated Minister Buda.

Polish – British cooperation in the offshore wind energy sector

Minister Buda informed Minister Trevelyan that in accordance with the Energy Policy of Poland until 2040 (EPP 2040) document is based primarily on development of nuclear energy and construction of the offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea.

Polish – British economic relations

Great Britain is the key economic partner of Poland – for many years it has been among the largest recipients of our export (following Germany, Czech and France). The 2021 trade value exceeded 19 billion euro (increase by 2 percent), while the Polish export grew by 6 percent and – upon the 2020 drop – returned to the pre-pandemic value.

The trade data for the first four months of this year are also optimistic – we record fast recovery of both the Polish export (increase by 21 percent) and import (increase by 44 percent).

After the Brexit, we carried out the survey among our entrepreneurs, according to which the companies have been learning fast to operate in the new conditions.  There are no major issues of concern in trading with Great Britain

– emphasised Waldemar Buda
