Polish-Romanian intergovernmental consultations

28.03.2023

Current challenges for economies resulting from the war in Ukraine, cooperation for its post-war reconstruction, decarbonization of industry, competitiveness of the EU economy or cooperation of defense industries were some of the topics discussed during talks between Minister Waldemar Buda and representatives of the Romanian government. Polish-Romanian intergovernmental consultations took place in Bucharest today.

During the consultations, the ministers, chaired – on the Polish side – by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, talked with their Romanian counterparts about the economy, defense, infrastructure, foreign affairs, etc.

During our talks, we touched on a number of topics related to sectoral policies and industrial cooperation, including circular economy, decarbonization of industry, and the competitiveness of the European economy. We devoted much attention to cooperation between enterprises and the challenges related to the liberalization of the EU’s trade policy towards Ukraine. There were many topics to raise and we certainly have not discussed all of them today. I am glad that we share similar views and interests as regards many of them

said Minister Waldemar Buda.

The minister met, among others, with Florin Spătaru, Romanian Minister of Economy, and Lucian-Ioan Rus, Deputy Minister of Entrepreneurship and Tourism.

In both countries, processes related to the ratification of the defense industry cooperation agreement, signed during last year’s consultations, have already been completed. It was announced that a commission would be established in the near future to bring Polish and Romanian companies in this sector closer together. Possibilities of cooperation in the reconstruction of Ukraine were also discussed. Both Poland and Romania showed significant support for Ukraine and its citizens.

Economic cooperation between Poland and Romania

Data from the Romanian Commercial Register shows that 1,260 companies with Polish capital were registered in Romania at the end of December 2020.

According to preliminary data of Statistics Poland for 2022, Polish exports to Romania increased compared to 2021 by 19.7% and amounted to EUR 7.1 billion, while Polish imports from Romania increased in 2022 by 12.6% and amounted to EUR 3.1 billion.
