US Tariffs on Steel and Aluminium – Videoconference of Trade Ministers
12.02.2025
Minister Krzysztof Paszyk chaired today’s informal videoconference of trade ministers. The meeting was convened in response to the United States’ announcement of the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium, which will affect the entire European Union. Deputy Minister Michał Baranowski also participated in the event.
The objective of the talks, called by the Polish Presidency, was, among other things, to summarise recent developments and prospects for cooperation with the United States, as well as to discuss what a common EU response to President Trump’s decisions might be. In addition to EU trade ministers, the meeting was also attended by Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, responsible for trade and economic security.
Our first discussion on EU-US trade relations under the new US administration took place just eight days ago, but since then, very significant changes have occurred. I am convinced that everyone agrees that holding this informal videoconference in such a short time was the right decision. I would like to thank you sincerely for your participation
- said Minister of Economic Development and Technology Krzysztof Paszyk at the start of the meeting.
Summarising the talks, Minister Paszyk thanked all participants for their insights and assessments.
Today’s meeting has shown that the Member States are united and determined to protect the European steel and aluminium sector against potential market destabilisation. And although the EU-US partnership is of strategic importance, Poland will support the European Commission in remaining proactive in such cases and in responding proportionately and responsibly when needed. At the same time, we want to maintain our offer of positive cooperation with the United States – to work together to remove barriers in the transatlantic market and to safeguard economic security
- emphasised the head of the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology.
On the tariffs
On 10 February 2025, it was announced that the United States would reinstate tariffs on steel and aluminium. All existing exemptions and arrangements with the EU and other countries are to be terminated by 12 March. From that date, all imports of steel products and steel-derived goods from the EU (and other sources) will be subject to additional ad valorem tariffs of 25%. As regards aluminium imports to the US, the tariffs will rise from 10% to 25% as of 12 March.
The issue of tariffs was the first item on the agenda at the government meeting held on 11 February. As Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated, we will certainly prepare an appropriate but measured European response, without unnecessary emotion.
It is important for me – and for all of us – that the European Union acts in solidarity. Whatever the course of action – and as I said, it must be balanced – it is also important that everyone stands together. Difficult times require full solidarity
- the Prime Minister said.
On the same day, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued a statement expressing deep regret over the US decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium exports from Europe. She stressed that unjustified tariffs on the EU would not go unanswered and would provoke firm and proportionate countermeasures. She noted that the EU would act to protect its economic interests.
