The Social Insurance Department is responsible for determining the directions of activities and the implementation of tasks, as well as for shaping system solutions in the social insurance system, in particular with regard to its organisation, principles of financing, submission to insurance e.g., pension, disability, sickness and accident insurance, the principles of determining contributions, their assessment basis and amount, as well as the principles of collecting and enforcing contributions, the principles of acquiring rights, assessment and payment of benefits from social insurance and the functioning of capital insurance and voluntary forms of saving for retirement purposes and benefits for veterans, invalids of war and military, preparation of standards in the above areas and monitoring of the implemented solutions.
 

• monitoring the way in which the adopted system solutions are implemented and their ongoing analysis and evaluation;
• alignment of social security law with EU law and with the standards of ILO conventions and recommendations;
• preparing information on analyses and forecasts to assess the situation in the sphere of the social security system;
• preparing concepts for institutional and organisational solutions relating to the operation of social security, in particular the organisation, supervision and rules for the financing and operation of unit-linked insurance and voluntary forms of pension saving;
• developing the Minister's positions on social security matters for the purposes of proceedings before the Constitutional Court;
• conducting administrative proceedings before the Minister in cases of appeals against decisions of the Social Insurance Institution (Polish Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych, ZUS) withdrawing authorisations to issue medical certificates;
• conducting matters related to the Minister's oversight of Social Security;
• implementation of reforms under the NRP within the Department’s area of responsibility;
• cooperating with the Financial Supervision Authority on voluntary forms of pension insurance (individual pension accounts, individual retirement security accounts, occupational pension schemes);
• conducting matters relating to subordination to the Minister – Head of the Office for Veterans and Victims of Repression;
• analysing the Supreme Court's social security rulings;
• conducting matters relating to the Minister's supervision over the Institute of Labour and Social Affairs.
