‘The funds granted to local governments will be used for building further 20 sheltered apartments. These are very important and necessary places. For many disabled persons, they are a chance for participation in social life and living more independently,’ says the Minister of Family, Labour and Social Policy Marlena Maląg.
At the end of 2018, the total number of sheltered apartments in Poland was 935. Altogether, 3,544 persons stayed in them.
What are sheltered apartments?
There are two kinds of them: a training sheltered apartment and an assisted sheltered apartment.
In a training sheltered apartment, support services are provided with regard to learning, effective time management and arrangement of formalities. In addition, inhabitants can develop or strengthen self-service, basic need fulfilment or housework skills. It is also important to maintain family bonds, look for a job and participate in the life of the local community.
The second kind of accommodation support is an assisted sheltered apartment. It is intended for a disabled or elderly person. Such an apartment can be used for an indefinite period. In an assisted sheltered apartment, the focus is put on assisted-living services and ensuring support in the performance of necessary everyday activities. Social contacts are also important in order to keep up or develop the independence of the person concerned on the level of his/her psychophysical capacity.
