Summary of support for seniors on Grandmother's Day
21.01.2022
On the occasion of today's Grandmother's Day and the upcoming Grandfather's Day, Minister of Family and Social Policy Marlena Maląg wished and thanked seniors for their presence in family life. Then, together with the Deputy Minister Stanislaw Szwed, she summarised the activities addressed to elderly people.
On 21 January this year, Grandmother's Day, a press briefing was held on senior programmes implemented by the Ministry of Family and Social Policy.
- For 6 years we have been taking care of seniors. We have increased pensions, restored the retirement age, introduced the 13th and 14th pensions. We are successively launching new initiatives and continuing social programmes to improve the economic situation of senior citizens and to make their lives more peaceful and active," says Marlena Maląg, Minister of Family and Social Policy.
Additional funds to support seniors
Additional support addressed to the elderly in 2021 amounted to PLN 36 billion, i.a. due to the valorisation of benefits, as well as 13th and 14th pensions. This amount is 10 times higher than in 2015, when the support reached only PLN 3.62 billion.
Apart from financial support, the senior policy also includes programmes supporting the activity of the elderly, i.e. "Aktywni+" and "Senior+", to which half a billion PLN will be allocated in the coming years. This year alone it will be PLN 100 million.
Today, there are approximately 970 "Senior+" Homes and Clubs throughout Poland. This year's edition of the programme, in which local governments submitted over 800 applications, is very popular.
- We can see that local governments are very interested in creating such places which are so much needed and willingly used by seniors with government support," said Minister Marlena Maląg.
Solidarity Senior Citizens Support Corps
In turn, Deputy Minister of Family and Social Policy Stanisław Szwed discussed other programmes addressed to seniors in the current year, such as the Solidarity Senior Support Corps and a dedicated helpline (22) 505 11 11. As part of this support, seniors can submit requests for assistance with groceries or medicines. Deputy Minister Szwed thanked the many volunteers providing assistance to the elderly during the pandemic.
During Friday's briefing, Minister Marlena Maląg also announced the opening of the next edition of the Local Government Pro Familia competition organised in cooperation with the Orlen Foundation. Applications may be submitted until the end of March. The contest will be adjudicated in May.
