Sun and heat or maybe rain and storms? Let’s take good care of ourselves, let’s make sure that this summer is safe
22.07.2020
We all know that we should drink plenty of liquids in the summer and that we should not go swimming in unguarded areas, in particular under the influence of alcohol. It is however also worth to pay attention to other issues related to safe holiday, i.e. not staying in the open sun for too long or not going too far away from home when we expect a strong storm. That relates in particular to the elderly, people who are sick or small children. Let’s keep an eye on each other.
Summertime is primarily a period of rest and blissful relaxation. Extreme weather conditions, such as heat which lasts for multiple days or - on the contrary - heavy rain and violent storms - can disturb our peace. It is therefore worth to remember about the basic safety principles, which can help us avoid the negative consequences of unstable summer weather.
Seniors, please take good care of yourselves
Older persons are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of, for instance, high temperatures. We should also remind our loved ones - grandparents, parents - to avoid staying in the open sun longer than necessary, to cover their heads and to drink water. If weather forecasts indicate a possibility of heavy rain and violent storms - they should not move too far away from their homes or another safe place. We should not underestimate such hazards.
– If we are away from home and a storm occurs - we should not hide under trees. Find a building where you can find shelter and wait until the storm is over. These are just simple rules which almost everyone knows, but judging by experience as well as tragic media reports - we do not always adhere to them. Our own security as well as the security of our loved ones is the most important - stresses the Minister of Family, Labour and Social Policy Marlena Maląg.
If we encounter a person who looks unwell in street, at the store or at work, we should approach them, ask if they need help and provide assistance or call an emergency phone number if necessary.
Children under proper care
Apart from seniors and people with disabilities during summertime, we should also provide adequate care to children, primarily the youngest ones.
– Children require our complete attention. At the beach or in other crowded areas we should stick together, not allow unguarded children to approach water, do not leave our children alone in cars, even just for a moment - advises Minister Marlena Maląg.
Sunscreen and a raincoat
It is a good idea to prepare a list of “must-haves” when packing for the summer holidays as well as when we want to spend the summer in the city. Head covers, sunscreen, plenty of water - everyone should remember about those things. If it is raining - a raincoat, an umbrella, a waterproof jacket.
– Today, during the coronavirus pandemic, we should also add a disinfectant to use on our hands or items - says the Head of the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy.
